For the last 25 years, Agribusiness Systems International has convened stakeholders, tested new ideas, and helped individuals and businesses adapt to market challenges and opportunities through the innovative application of sound business practices.
Since our creation by technical experts at our parent organization ACDI/VOCA in 1993, we have worked across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East on challenges ranging from supporting smallholder producers and expanding access to financial services to developing workforces and helping farmers profit from sustainable sourcing.
In 2018, in celebration of our 25th anniversary, we are changing our name to Tanager, to reflect how we ourselves adapt to co-create ways for people to benefit from rapidly changing market dynamics.
Why ‘Tanager’?
During his famous survey voyage aboard the HMS Beagle, Charles Darwin observed specialized behaviors and adaptations across various species of finches. These birds, which are part of the Tanager family, are especially well-known for their varied beaks which evolved over time to perform specific functions. Some of them even used twigs, sticks and cactus spines as tools. These observations ultimately played an important role in developing Darwin’s theory of evolution. The Tanager name draws directly on this story and the inherent nature of birds. It relates both to the ability to adapt in order to create solutions and upward and forward movement by taking flight.
About our logo and visual brand
Tanager’s logo is a confident mark for an organization with the expertise to “make it happen.” The colors of the mark are pulled from the vibrant plumage found among the birds of the tanager family. The upward “wing” of the T symbolizes life-changing economic opportunity—an upward growth curve. Also represented are the qualities agility and flexibility. The vertical “trunk” of the T reflects our roots in agriculture and our being grounded in reality. The lower-case font of the name is both accessible and friendly.
Tanager is an international nonprofit that brings people together to co-create economic and social opportunities that change lives. The Tanager name and logo speak directly to finding and using the right tools in the pursuit of that effort.
