Gender equality commitments are important but without resources, systems and accountability to back it up, meaningful change remains difficult.
Through IGNITE+, Tanager and its Local Service Providers comprising of Fair and Sustainable Ethiopia (F&S), Association Professionnelle des Systèmes Financiers Décentralisés du Burkina Faso (APFSD-BF), Tymax Agribusiness Solutions Limited and Ikore International Development Limited are working to close this gap by strengthening the capacity of agricultural institutions to apply Gender-Responsive Budgeting (GRB) in agriculture and food systems.
Recently, gender experts from Tanager and its Local Service Providers across Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Burkina Faso came together in Addis Ababa for a three-day co-creation workshop to review the Gender Responsive Budgeting Training Manual, to test concepts and practical exercises, share country experiences, and ensure the manual is relevant and practical for agricultural institutions.

The discussions surfaced important lessons:
- Budgets are powerful tools for advancing gender equality: When institutions understand who benefits from investments and where inequalities persist.
- Data matters: Sex-disaggregated evidence can help institutions identify gaps, make better resource allocation decisions and measure progress.
- Leadership drives change: Leadership and institutional ownership are essential for turning gender commitments into funded actions.
- Practical tools make GRB actionable: The workshop introduced the READY Framework and practical exercises to help institutions assess their readiness and strengthen gender-responsive budgeting.

Experiences shared by Local Service Providers provided valuable insights into common challenges and practical approaches to advancing GRB.
The Gender Responsive Budgeting Training Manual provides practical tools, guidance and agriculture-focused case studies for Local Service Providers and the institutions they support.
