Tanager celebrates International Women’s Day 2022 and recommits to gender & social inclusion

International Women’s Day 2022 is an opportunity for development professionals to sharpen our approaches to improving gender outcomes for the communities we serve. It is also a celebration of the women in our programs and organization who work tirelessly towards better gender outcomes for their communities. At Tanager progress towards gender equality is not a stand-alone issue – this work is cross cutting and integrated into everything we do, from internal policies to external interventions.

IGNITE brings Local Service Providers together for a week of learning and collaboration

IGNITE has also forged partnerships with four Local Service Providers – Fair & Sustainable in Ethiopia, Nafaka Kilimo in Tanzania, PanAfricare in Burkina Faso, and Centre for Gender Economics in Nigeria to scale IGNITE’s approach. In early March, IGNITE hosted 12 staff members representing the technical experts from the four LSPs.

An open letter on International Women’s Day from Tanager President Ana Bilik

Today, as the world celebrates International Women’s Day, I reflect back on how I commemorated IWD in 2020, on the cusp of a pandemic that would change our very definition of normal. On this day last year, I sat on a panel with esteemed Tanager leaders and gender advisors Maureen Munjua, Sita Zougouri, and Caroline Mukeku. We talked about advances in women’s economic empowerment in the countries where we live, and the work that is still needs to be done.

Uncommon Partnerships: The Road to the 2021 Food Systems Summit

In 2021 the global community will come together for an exciting and important event for all global food system actors. With the 2021 Food Systems Summit the United Nations has created a movement to organize and galvanize action towards achieving the Sustainable Develop Goals as they relate to nutrition. Replete with action tracks and organized country dialogues, the 2021 Food Systems Summit will bring together the public and private sector around critical issues facing smallholder farming communities – the communities that Tanager works to serve.

IGNITE diagnostics for gender and nutrition mainstreaming

The IGNITE mechanism is a five-year investment implemented by Tanager, Laterite, and 60_Decibels to strengthen the ability of African agricultural institutions to integrate nutrition and gender into their interventions. As part of the work, IGNITE has developed a diagnostic tool to identify areas where institutions can work to institutionalize gender and nutrition, and assess the progress of an institution towards the goals of gender and nutrition mainstreaming.

Communities, connection, and COVID-19 in India

In India, Tanager partners with smallholder farmers, government entities, corporations, and foundations to help increase farmer income through robust training on Good Agricultural Practices, support for gender equality, strengthening of Farmer Producer Organizations, and streamlined access to markets. COVID-19 and the restrictions put in place by the government have brought new challenges to implementing this work. However, Tanager’s close connection to the communities where we work is helping us make progress on commitments without risking the safety of farmers or staff.

We are living in unprecedented times, at least in my lifetime, where a global pandemic is evolving so quickly. As a global organization, Tanager is seeing and feeling the impacts of COVID-19 around the world. At the outset, our primary imperative has been the health and safety of our staff, families, and the communities where we work. As flights were being cancelled and boarders closed, Tanager quickly directed its energies to repatriating traveling staff members; closing offices and transitioning to global teleworking; and communicating with partners and people in the communities where we work about social distancing and proper hygiene (hand washing) to ensure everyone’s safety.
